Department of Science and Technology Studies
In January 1997, the University’s Academic Planning Committee and the Senate of the University of
Malaya approved the establishment of the Department of Science and Technology Studies. Although
the Department is considered the youngest in the Faculty of Science, it has actually a long history.
The Department started off as the Unit for the History and Philosophy of Science at the Dean’s
Office, Faculty of Science, as far back as 1975. The Unit was then initiated by then Vice Chancellor,
Royal Professor Ungku A. Aziz.
The Department currently offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in interdisciplinary
studies of science, technology and innovation in relations to sustainability, policy, management,
history, philosophy, ethics, sociology, communication, economics, politics and religion.
PROGRAMME GOAL
This programme is aimed at equipping students with the necessary theoretical, analytical and
empirical skills to address the future social, economic, technological and management challenges
arising from explosive development in science and technology.
The programme is built upon the experience and expertise of the teaching staff of the department,
whose research and areas of expertise include the following:
• Science, Technology and Innovation Policy
• Economics of Technology and Innovation Management
