Introduction to traditional and state-of-art technologies in environmental management and waste
minimization for a clean environment; ecological concepts and the role of microorganisms and
biological systems; techniques in waste analysis. Technologies in liquid, solid and toxic waste
management. Climate change; carbon and nitrogen sequestration; alternative and renewable energy
sources.

SOC 7008 Principles in Bioprocess Engineering
The course will cover important concepts in bioprocess engineering, focusing on applications in
biological systems. Topics like dimensionless numbers, mass balance, kinetics and energetics,
aeration and mixing, mode of operation, sterilization and separation are introduced.
