students possess the understanding of main ecological concepts and principles governing
environmental management. These concepts include definitions from ecosystems to systems
ecology and ecosystem modelling. This is followed by discussion on the current environmental issues
and environmental problems faced by mankind in general such as global warming, acid rain,
pollution and how ecological principles maybe used to solve these problems. The second part of the
course covers the objectives, components, variables and indicators used for environmental
monitoring and assessment purposes. The topics covered by this part include environmental quality
criteria and standards, environmental chemistry and engineering, measurement and analysis of
relevant physical, chemical and biological indicators of water quality, and various techniques in
environmental monitoring and assessment such as EIA, LCA and others.
