                          INTERNSHIP

MS. Nur Aini Sofiyya Binti Zaini

Internship company: Institute for Research in Molecular
Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia Health
        Campus
        Internship duration: 18 July 2022 - 8 September 2022
        (2 months)
Industry sector: Research in Molecular Medicine
        Position: Research Intern

Pursuing a research internship at INFORMM has
benefitted me in a way that it allows me to learn how a
reputable Higher Institution of Centre Excellence
(HICoE) research institute produces high impact
research. I was assigned a mini research project under
the supervision of an INFORMM lecturer and a

        postgraduate student as my mentor.

The outcome was I can independently design a checkerboard table and perform Enzyme-
Linked Oligonucleotide Assay (ELONA) to measure the binding between Protein Death Ligand
1 (PD-L1) and aptamer which is a replacement for antibody. Throughout the journey, I gained
a lot of input regarding data analysis using GraphPad Prism software, importance of
molecular diagnostics and therapeutics, determining impact factors in research publications
        and postgraduate studies opportunities.

Although I was from a different field (biochemistry), with the guidance, knowledge, and

experience from the lecturers, laboratory staff, and seniors in INFORMM, I managed to
master the techniques and skills in the lab in a short period of time. The collaborative
research discussions that we had done has trained me to be willing to learn something new
        and embrace different perspective.

Apart from that, the healthy and enthusiastic working environment had motivated me to
build my confidence in dealing with any setbacks while enjoying my time there. This
experience has equipped me with the current trend in biological research such as sensor
technology in the area of medical and healthcare.

Overall, I found the research internship rewarding as it provided ample experience in actual
research setting and relevance in industrial application, which were crucial in helping me to
secure a job in the future. I highly recommend INFORMM for future undergraduates.
