STUDENT FEATURE
POSTGRADUATE
Wang Kah Lun
In 2018, I received my M.Sc. in Mathematics from Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia with a CGPA of 4.0. After working as a
lecturer in Cambridge A-Level Mathematics for a year, I
began the journey of my Ph.D. studies at the Institute of
Mathematical Sciences, Universiti Malaya. My research title
is “Factorizations of Groups and Related Problems”, which is
currently a hot topic in group theory. I am conducting this
research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Angelina Chin
Yan Mui and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Kok Bin. This research
aims to study different kinds of methods to factorize a
group. Factorizations of groups have found applications in
different fields of mathematics such as cryptography and
coding theory. My first research paper was published in
February 2021 with the title “Complete decomposition of
abelian groups”. While pursuing my Ph.D., I am also working
as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) and my main duty
is to analyze factorizations of groups using a system for
computational discrete algebra called GAP. Besides being a
GRA, I have been an active member of the Mathematics
Stack Exchange for seven years. This is a great online
platform for Q&A in mathematics. Up to now, I have
answered more than 200 questions and gained a
reputation score of around 8500 on the platform.
Farah Hannan
Ms. Farah Hannan graduated with a first-class BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry from International Islamic
University Malaysia (IIUM). Due to her excellence academic, she was allowed to pursue a fast-track Ph.D.
at the Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC) in the Department of Physics under the
supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Woon Kai Lin. Her research project involves studying charge carrier traps in
organic semiconductors in order to fabricate more efficient performance of organic light-emitting diodes
(OLEDs) which won the national level of the Materials Lecture Competition (MLC 2021).
The MLC 2021 Semi-final and final round were organised by University Sains Malaysia (USM) together with
the Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3-UK) on
the 14th July 2021 and 28th July 2021 respectively via online. Both events were conducted using Webex
platform and aired via live streaming on the Facebook page of the School of Materials and Mineral
Resources Engineering. The winners received a cash prize of RM 3000 which was sponsored by IMM. The
first prize winner will represent Malaysia in YPWLC2021 in November, which will be organised by IOM3-UK
via an online competition. We are proud to announce that she is the only Malaysian that will compete with
another finalist who won the Young Persons’ Lecture Competition (YPLC) from another country.
During her undergraduate studies, she was a very active student in academic and extracurricular
activities, such as organizing events; treasure hunt and a cooking competition in order to foster better
relationships between local and international students. In Universiti Malaya, she was also involved in the
International Low Dimensional Materials Innovation, Invention and Design 2021 (ILOC 2021) as a
committee member in the Protocol and Registration Bureau.
