A Great experience at UM
Assalomu Aleykum! By Bahrom Razzakov , Namangan Engineering
As a young man, I was always fascinated by the customs, Construction Institute, Uzbekistan
traditions, cultural ceremonies and different languages
spoken in different countries; it was a way to fulfill my
desire to travel. So imagine my joy when I was told that my
institute had assigned me to visit Universiti Malaya. This
was my first trip abroad, visiting the famous city of Kuala
Lumpur!
Prior to the visit, I read a lot about UM. It was inspiring to
know how highly it ranks in the World University Rankings
and is 8th in the rankings of the Asian University. The
difference between the Institute where I work and UM was
noticeable. As we seek to introduce independent learning
among our students, I see it being done systematically in Mr Looi, the English Dept. HOD with Bahrom Razzakov
UM. I was impressed by the scientific spirit of the students
and the teaching practices in the classroom. I look forward
to implementing some of these practices in my own
classroom.
However, I did experience a bit of a problem with the food
here but it was a small hindrance as the educators and the
staff at UM accepted me as a teammate. I will never forget
the sincerity of the people of Kuala Lumpur, the city, the
transport system and of course, the lecturers and the
library! I hope that Namangan Engineering Construction
Institute continues to cooperate with the Universiti Malaya
and this will not be my last visit to UM. Trying out Malaysian food with the English Dept staff
Chinese Studies' Year 1 Students Making Ketam
Discovery a Success – A Sulam Project
By Dr Florence Kuek Chee Wee
During the recent SULAM engagement project, the first
year students from the Universiti Malaya Chinese Studies
Department formed the sub-committee in charge of social
media promotion, event emceeing, registration and
marshalling for the 5km ‘Ketam Discovery Walk 2022’ on
14 May 2022. The event was part of the sustainable
environment initiative organised by the Lions Clubs of Mid
Valley KL and Damansara KL, in collaboration with the
Pulau Ketam Village Community Management Council
(MPKK).
The UM students were actively engaged in pre-event
publicity through social media posts including posters and
video clips. They had also went to recce Ketam island
twice before planning and executing their on-site event
tasks. The event attracted more than 600 participants, all
of whom pledged to support the sustainable development
of the island, including running the event waste-free.
