The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor for each candidate component who is pursuing
the research component. The Faculty is also encouraged to appoint at least two (2)
supervisors for each candidate. For appointment criteria of supervisors, refer to the
Supervision Policy for Postgraduate Candidates.
Thesis
The candidates must submit a doctoral thesis NOT exceeding one hundred thousand
(100,000) words (footnotes, references, appendixes, tables and figures are excluded)
at the end of the programme. The candidates are also required to defend the thesis
in a viva-voce session.
Candidates of the PhD programme need to provide proof of the acceptance of at
least one (1) article in journals indexed by Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS), OR
at least one (1) book published by publishers listed in the Thomson Reuters Web of
Science (WoS) Master Book List or University of Malaya Press (UM Press) or Dewan
Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) or any publisher recognised by the Faculty, OR at least two
(2) publications in refereed journals approved by the faculty before they can be
awarded the doctoral degree.
Additional requirements:
• Fill-up e-logbook to document formal supervisory meetings.
• Submit e-Progress Report at the end of every semester.
• Present Proposal Defence in Semester 1 or 2.
• Present Candidature Defence by Semester 5.
• Present the research in PhD Thesis Seminar prior to thesis submission.
• Pass the viva (oral examination).
