Course Learning At the end of this course, students are able to:
Outcomes
(1) Examine the major sociological theoretical paradigms
and concepts in sociology development;
(2) Analyse various concepts, theories and measurements
of economic development in developed and developing
countries;
(3) Evaluate issues, processes, and alternative ways of
conceptualizing development in developing countries;
and
(4) Integrate the concept of development, government policy
and institutional intervention to resolve the country’s
socioeconomics issues.
Synopsis of Course This course provides an overview of the subfield of sociology
Contents of development. It aims to serve as introduction to
sociological analysis of the development process. This
course provides an opportunity for students to familiarize
themselves with sociological theory and the concept of
development. This course consists of five sections. The first
part provides an overview of sociological developments and
philosophical foundations. The second section deliberates on
the classical theories of development. The third section
describes the evolution of the system, while the fourth section
highlights the key development issues. The final section
gives consideration to the possible future(s) of development.
Assessment Weightage Continuous Assessment: 60%
Final Examination: 40%
