Kesusasteraan dan Budaya Afrika
Africa Literature and Culture

Kursus ini merupakan perkembangan dari kursus Suara Afrika yang sedia ada di jabatan. Pelajar akan mengkaji pelbagai perdebatan
yang mencirikan perkembangan moden kritikan sastera Afrika. Mereka akan memberi perhatian khusus kepada hubungan antara
kritikan sastera Afrika dan trend utama lain seperti kesusasteraan dunia dan teori pasca kolonial. Mereka juga akan memberi
perhatian khusus kepada perkembangan serentak dalam wacana berhubung dengan sejarah, politik, ekonomi, sosiologi dan budaya
Afrika.

This course extends on the Africa Speaks course offered in the department. Students will study a range of debates that have
characterised the modern development of African literary criticism. They will pay particular attention to the links between African
literary criticism and other major trends like world literature and postcolonial theory. They will also pay particular attention to the

Budaya Popular dan Kesusasteraan
Popular Culture and Literature

Melalui penerokaan novel popular dan filem, tujuan kursus ini adalah untuk membolehkan pelajar lebih menghargai bagaimana
budaya popular membentuk kehidupan kita. Kursus ini akan merangkumi hujahhujah yang menyokong dan menentang budaya
popular serta pelbagai pendekatan kepadanya. Topik akan diambil daripada subbudaya, countercultures, budaya selebriti, budaya
Siber, fandom, dan ibadah hero. Genre dilindungi mungkin termasuk seram, westerns, fiksyen sains, dan agama popular. Pelajar juga
akan menggunakan database yang di wujudkan dalam kursus 'Penulisan dari Malaysia dan Singapura', sebagai satu jalan untuk
menerokai Digital Humanities.

Through an exploration of popular cultural texts, the course will enable students to understand the relationship between popular
culture and society and to broader cultural concerns. The course will examine the ways in which popular culture brings a new kind of
seriousness of purpose to this genre of cultural productions, blurring what's left of the boundaries between the highbrow and the
lowbrow. Topics will be drawn from subcultures, countercultures, celebrity culture, cyber culture, fandom, and hero worship. Readings
and material will cover the genres of film, the graphic novel, the comic, short story and the essay. Students will also use the database
created in the course 'Writing from Malaysia and Singapore', as a way to engage with Digital Humanities.

Kesusasteraan Zaman Restoration dan Abad ke Lapan Belas
Literature of the Restoration and the Eighteenth Century

Pelajar akan didedahkan kepada beberapa teks dan penulis penting dari era Augustan. Kursus ini akan bermula dengan
perbincangan mengenai Sastera 'Restoration' dan beralih kepada idea-idea dan tulisan-tulisan pada abad kelapan belas. Pelbagai
teks dari genre yang berbeza akan dianalisis.

Students will be exposed to some important Augustan texts and writers. The course will begin with discussions on Restoration Literature
and move on to ideas and writings of the eighteenth century. A variety of texts from different genres will be analysed.
