materials and online databases to internal knowledge by instituting relevant
repositories and knowledge systems. Easy access to information is also enhanced by
ways of upgrading the information technology infrastructure so that the information
reach is wider and faster. Apart from this, relevant policies such as content
management policy and information security policy are put in place to encourage
better knowledge sharing as well as storing of information.

               • Taking Advantage of Existing Expertise and Experience
Part of making knowledge resources more visible to the organisation also includes
                                                                        22
the visibility of subject matter experts. O’Dell and Grayson quoted in their book,
the late Lew Platt, former CEO of HP, said, "If only HP knew what HP knows, we
would be three times more productive." Implying that if more of their engineers,
designers and other technical experts knew and leveraged each other, they could have
collectively done and achieve more than what they had.

               • Enhance Learning as a Norm
A library is a knowledge-based organisation and should aspire to make the
organisation it serves as such as well. Also, as a learning organisation that professes
to be a continuously learning organisation. To ensure this, a life-long learning policy
could be introduced. The introduction of KM methods, tools and techniques
throughout the organisation should also be considered. In an organisation, the staff
should learn or has the opportunity to learn from the learning of others. Thus,
knowledge sharing is key. Another opportunity for a library is to redesign its spaces
as knowledge spaces where knowledge creation, sharing and transfer happen
                  naturally.

                • Providing Methods, Tools, Templates, Techniques and Examples
The introduction of methods, tools and techniques is also the building block to
support the staff in an organisation to produce consistency in the quality and
compatibility of work. An example is when the best template for presentation slide is
shared across the organisation. The running of major periodic events is made easy
due to the availability of templates, programmes, procedures and lessons from the
                  last organising committees.

               • Support Research and Development
