Symposium on Built Environment
2025

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and a very good morning.
I welcome all distinguished guests, participants, and thought leaders to the Symposium
on Built Environment 2025, hosted by the Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti
Malaya.
The built environment is not merely about structures, but about the spirit of civilization
itself — how we imagine, inhabit, and sustain our shared future. Every city, building,
and public space reflects a moral and intellectual choice made by humanity: whether
to construct for permanence or purpose, for profit or people, for today’s comfort or
tomorrow’s survival.
We stand at a defining juncture. The next quarter century will determine not only
the physical landscapes of our societies, but the moral architecture of our world. As
climate threats intensify, as artificial intelligence reshapes design and urban living, and
as global migration and inequality test our collective resilience — the built environment
becomes the front line of civilization’s adaptation.
This is no longer about the art of building; it is about the science of survival. The
cities of the future will not be measured by their skylines, but by their capacity to
sustain human dignity, ecological balance, and technological harmony. The architects,
planners, and engineers of tomorrow must not only master precision and innovation
— they must embody foresight, empathy, and responsibility.
Our challenge, therefore, is not to build more, but to build wisely. Not to pursue
grandeur, but to design meaning. The spaces we create must heal, connect, and inspire.
