Leading with Purpose
Messages of the Vice Chancellor SELECTED FOREWORDS IN BOOKS
They must transcend aesthetics to serve as instruments of justice, sustainability, and
shared humanity.
Universities hold a unique moral obligation in this pursuit. They are no longer just
producers of knowledge, but custodians of civilisation’s direction. The future of the
built environment cannot be dictated solely by market forces or technological trends; it
must be anchored in the conscience of human purpose — in education that cultivates
not only skill, but wisdom.
As we commemorate a quarter century of thought and transformation within the
Faculty of Built Environment, we are reminded that the foundation of progress is
not steel or stone, but vision. A vision that anticipates change before it arrives, that
prepares minds before crises strike, and that empowers the next generation to design
with humility and purpose.
In this spirit, the conversation here must rise beyond disciplines and borders — to
rethink what it means to build a civilisation in harmony with nature, technology, and
humanity. The built environment of the future will not be defined by what we construct,
but by what we choose to preserve.
This symposium, therefore, is not a destination but a dialogue — a continuation of
humanity’s timeless question: how shall we live together, sustainably and wisely, in the
centuries to come?
Thank you
