Home of the Bright. Land of the Brave

Di Sini Bermulanya Pintar, Tanah Tumpahnya Berani

               UM SDG Report 2024

                                                                                              Foreword

As we approach the critical milestone of 2030 and the ambitious target of Net Zero by
2050, we find ourselves in a pivotal moment for sustainable development. The current
political, economic and climate landscape at the global level presents both significant
challenges and unprecedented opportunities. These domains will remain among the
most important factors in determining the resilience and sustainability of civilisations
and humanity, moving forward. For Universiti Malaya (UM), these set the platform for
rejuvenation, durability, and a consistent drive to ensure that all capacities and future
planning of projections and targets will take into account the needs, demands and
changes of the present and the future. In this context, higher education institutions
are uniquely positioned to set the example, instilling these principles in the leaders of
               tomorrow.
At UM, our mission is to push the boundaries of knowledge while nurturing the next
generation of leaders. In doing so, we embrace our inherent responsibility to align
the facets of education, research, operations and governance with the principles of
sustainability and resilience. This commitment is not merely an aspiration, it is an
obligation we recognise as fundamental to our identity as Malaysia’s most prestigious
university that seeks to make a meaningful impact in the world and creating a better
tomorrow for civilisational progress and for the future generations.
We firmly believe that achieving the 17 SDGs requires a multifaceted approach.
Eradicating poverty and addressing social disadvantages must go hand in hand
with enhancing health and education, reducing inequality, and fostering economic
growth, all while responding to the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Our 219
collective efforts to advance these goals are critical, as they reflect our dedication to
creating a more just and sustainable future.
At UM, we are steadfast in our commitment to the SDGs, as evidenced by significant
milestones such as the establishment of the UM Sustainable Development Centre
(UMSDC), the renewed focus of our Living Labs on carbon neutrality acceleration,
circular economy, and EcoCampus, and the implementation of innovative campus
sustainability initiatives like the Rimba Project, Water Warriors, UM Zero Waste
Campaign (UM ZWC) and UM Eco-Campus. These initiatives are designed to foster
synergy among various stakeholders. Our partnerships with local and global entities
amplify our efforts, allowing us to embed sustainable development as a core principle
across all facets of university life.
This report not only showcases our consistent achievements with SDG but also
facilitates the measurement and reporting of our impact. I would like to extend my
gratitude to everyone who has gracefully contributed to this comprehensive account
of our efforts. Your commitment to transparency and accountability is invaluable as
we continue to navigate the complexities of sustainable development. As the premier
university, it is incumbent upon us to create, lead and sustain these honourable values
and principles for our current and future generations.
As we look to the future, let us continue to collaborate, innovate, and inspire one
another in our pursuit of a more sustainable world. Together, we can make our
ambitions a reality and build a more sustainable and inclusive future.
