I
had the privilege of meeting our newest cohort of postgraduate
students - bright, passionate minds embarking on their Master’s
and PhD journeys at Universiti Malaya. Walking through the
258 registration venues, I was deeply inspired by the energy, curiosity
and determination reflected in every conversation.

Due to constraints of my schedule, I was only able to visit four faculties to greet the
new students, and I have earlier recorded my welcoming address to all of the new
postgraduate students to the rest of the other faculties. I have to apologise for the
inability to cover grounds for all the faculties, but the spirit of innovation and passion
of breakthroughs and innovation remain as high as ever.
Each of you represents not just the future of Malaysia, but a vital force shaping the
destiny of our world. In this new chapter of higher learning, you stand at the intersection
where knowledge creation meets human impact. Whether your research explores the
frontiers of climate resilience, global health, AI and technology, or peace and security,
every step you take brings us closer to solutions that humanity urgently needs.

At UM, we believe postgraduate education is more than an academic pursuit, it is an
act of service to the world. Our university is a platform for discovery and innovation, a
global community where ideas transcend borders, and where research translates into
meaningful action.
You are now part of a proud legacy of thinkers, innovators and changemakers who
have turned ideas into impact, from advancing medical breakthroughs to redefining
sustainable technologies. Let your work echo beyond the campus, contributing to

our shared humanity, for the betterment of the new generations and the future of
