Leading with Purpose
Messages of the Vice Chancellor MESSAGES OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR
20. For the first time ever, both NUS and UM have initiated the inaugural Annual High
Level Academic Workshop in providing a common platform for the exchange of
ideas, expertise and intellectual capacity from both sides from the pool of talented
human capital that we have, with the first theme of biomedical engineering and
related fields.
21. It was a successful event where experts and aspiring leaders of the field from both
sides had a fruitful academic and intellectual exchange and discourse on the best
research and academic practices in the field.
22. This event serves as the highest symbol of our enduring historical ties and
friendship, and it portrays our deep rooted shared commitment and vow in
creating new impact to the world and civilisations.
23. This momentous occasion indeed marks an everlasting symbol of our deep rooted
ties that are pillared on historical trust, bond, camaraderie and a rich synergy of
common roots and ties that will continue to lay a solid foundation for the future.
24. By this, it is worth revisiting our shared and enriching history in our common roots.
25. UM was founded on 28 September 1905 in Singapore as the King Edward VII
College of Medicine and on 8th October 1949, it became Universiti Malaya
with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College
(founded in 1928).
26. The Carr-Saunders Commission on University Education in Malaya, recommended
the setting up of the university.
27. The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its
establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions on
15 January 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur.
