92 year old Professor Dr. Wang Gungwu receiving his Honarary Doctorate
Degree Award from HRH Sultan Muizzuddin Shah. Both are smiling warmly to

His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah, the Sultan of Perak and Chancellor
of Universiti Malaya conferred the award of Honorary Doctorate of Letters
to Professor Wang at the 62nd Universiti Malaya Convocation Ceremony
held at the Dewan Tunku Canselor on 5 December 2022. Professor Wang,
who is 92, is a world renowned scholar in the field of History of China and
Southeast Asian history. He has written extensively on the history of China
and Southeast Asia, and has published numerous books and articles on the
subject.
Professor Wang, who is now University Professor at the National Universiy
of Singapore, was among the first batch of lecturers who served Universiti
Malaya Kuala Lumpur Campus when it was established in 1959. He was
appointed Professor in 1963, and served as the Dean of the Arts Faculty in
the same year. He was also a Senate Member and Head of History
Department. Professor Wang contributed enormously in laying a firm
academic foundation for UM during its formative years.
Professor Wang left UM in 1968 to serve as Professor and later, Director for
the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National
University. He became Vice Chancellor of Hong Kong University (1986-
1995) and went on to transform the university to be a world renowned
Toh Puan Dato' Seri Hajjah Dr. Aishah Ong, the Pro- university. Professor Wang returned to the region and served as the
Chancellor, officiating and awarding the FASS Master's Director of East Asia Institute at NUS and later also served as Chairman of

the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.
The Honorary Doctorate from UM is a fitting recognition of Professor
Wang’s immense contributions to the field of History of China and
Southeast Asian history and his commitment to the preservation of the
region’s cultural heritage. It is also a testament to his stature as an excellent
academic leader.
The Honorary Doctorate from UM is the latest in a long line of awards and
honours that Professor Wang has received throughout his career. He has
previously been awarded the Fellow of the Australian Academy of the
Humanities (1971); Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1991);
Academician of Academia Sinica (1992); Winner of the international
Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize (1994); Foreign Honorary Member of the
American Academy of Arts and Science (1995); Honorary Doctorate of
Letters from the University of Hong Kong (2002); University Professor,
National University of Singapore (2007); Honorary Doctorate of Letters
from the University of Cambridge (2009); Economic and Social Science
