A bridge in the sky linking the tropics to climate
change in Antarctica

In conjunction with the celebration of Antarctica Day,
Tropical Antarctic Teleconnections (TATE), an
international action group, sponsored a public talk and
outreach activity at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
on 30 November 2022.
The ‘A bridge in the sky linking the tropics to climate
change in Antarctica’ by Dr Kyle Clem, Lecturer in Climate
Science at the Department of Geography, Victoria
University of Wellington in New Zealand and member of
TATE was insightful and thought-provoking. The talk
highlighted the geographical connections between Group photo with the speaker
different regions of the globe and their links to climate
variability.
More than 100 students and academics participated in the
talk that was jointly organized by the National Antarctic
Research Center (NARC), UM-FASS Climate Change
Network, Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts and
Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya and Sultan and Mizan
Antarctic Research Foundation (YPASM). Exhibition at the Dataran Sastera
ACU Commonwealth Universities Virtual
Exchange Programme-2022: Addressing global
challenges through intercultural collaboration
The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)
invited Associate Professor Dr Helena Varkkey,
Department of International and Strategic Studies, and Dr
Sheeba Chenoli, Department of Geography, to participate
in the ACU Commonwealth Virtual Exchange Program
2022 as course coordinators on behalf of Universiti
Malaya.
ACU Commonwealth Virtual Exchange program brings
students from around the world to provide a space to
connect, collaborate and exchange ideas. Students work
together to explore several global challenges linked to the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including global
health and climate change. They also exercise leadership,
teamwork, and problem-solving skills to devise innovative
business ideas to address a challenge.
The main program of the virtual exchange was created by
the experts from the Universiti Malaya, and Manipal
Academy of Higher Education, India. UM designed the
course content for the module 'Climate Action for the
SDGs' which included lectures on ‘Causes and Effects of
Lecturer drop-in session by Dr Sheeba Chenoli and AP Dr Helena
Varkkey Climate Change’ by Dr Sheeba Chenoli and ‘Global
Climate Governance’ by AP Dr Helena Varkkey.
