STRATEGIC PLAN 4
TO CULTIVATE GREEN ICT CULTURE AMONG THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY
In accordance with the National Green Technology Policy that was introduced on July 24, 2009 by Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, PTM has responded to the government by introducing
the fourth major strategic initiative which is Embedding Green ICT Culture among University Citizens.
This initiative is very compatible with the Green Technology Policy because the Green Technology Policy,
the fourth strategy is related to ICT.
According to the ICT Usage Guidelines Towards Green ICT in the Public Service issued by the MAMPU on
August 3, 2010, Green Technology refers to the development and application of products, equipment
and systems to conserve the environment and natural resources and minimise or mitigate the negative
effects of human activities. Green ICT is referred as the practice of production, use and disposal of
computers, servers and computer accessories such as monitors, mice, printers and networking
equipment effectively with minimal impact or no impact on the environment. The aim is to reduce the
usage of hazardous substances, conserve electricity and lengthen the lifetime of ICT products.
Application of Green ICT culture invites and teaches University citizens to practice best practices in the
use of hardware / ICT services:
• To practice procurement of ICT products that have Green ICT features such as Green certified
products, electricity saving, produce low heat, eco-friendly, energy-star rating and use
minimum toxic level materials such as printer ink and toner
• To buy hardware according to reasonable specifications to avoid over specification.
• To practice the principles of reduction, reuse and recycling in daily activities when using ICT
tools
• To practice the disposal process procedures that is concerned with environment conservation.
• To prudently use ICT tools by the use of screen-savers, standby-mode for monitors and shut
down the PC after office hours or if not used for a long period of time.
Departments in the University are encouraged to:
• To use Thin Client technology, Virtual Desktop and so on that can reduce electricity
consumption and thus reduce maintenance costs.
• To limit the use of printers by creating a strict policy for University staff so as to avoid making
prints arbitrarily (paperless).
