Home of the Bright. Land of the Brave

Di Sini Bermulanya Pintar, Tanah Tumpahnya Berani

                                                                                            10
Message from the Vice Chancellor MESSAGE NO.

               Dear Campus Community,

               Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
                                                                                                14 JULY 2024
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera
I would like to address SIX important points regarding our way forward.

               1. The FIRST POINT is with regards to the strategic importance of the facets
of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and
                   Governance (ESG).
               2. These two domains will remain among the most important factors in determining
the resilience and sustainability of civilisations and humanity moving forward. For
any institution, these set the platform for rejuvenation, durability, and a consistent
drive to ensure that all capacities and future planning of projections and targets
will take into account the needs, demands and changes of the present and the
                   future.
               3. In UM, in line with our quest to create a better tomorrow for humanity and the
nation, we place great importance on the roles and power of the SDG and
ESG. This importance transcends all denominators of our current approach and
                   portfolios.
               4. In line with this new importance, I hereby announce that I will start a comprehensive
and future driven outlook and framework of Universiti Malaya in adopting, 29
implementing and creating new ventures and goals that will align with, and take
into account the principles of the SDG and the ESG.
               5. This will cover a comprehensive new structure and plan, ranging from a plastic
free campus to a more strategic and holistic academic and research capacity that
can contribute to a more sustainable, values-based and future driven future for
civilisations and humanity in improving lives and solving issues from health and
diseases to global peace and stability.
               6. Some of the immediate things that we will start will include the initiative to have
a plastic free environment in meetings and events on campus, and to focus on
having as much natural lighting as possible to reduce the use of electricity. These
are some of the low hanging fruits and immediate initiatives that can and must
                   be started.
               7. Further details will ensue on the various lead projects and initiatives towards
this bigger picture, with several portfolios and departments tasked to carry out,
monitor and advance these causes and initiatives.
               8. All these will further elevate our quest and strive to be among the best in the world
with capable competencies and the right conscience to change the nation and
the world to be better and stamp our mark in creating a better tomorrow for every
living being and for our environment.
               9. These will be based on our importance and focus on ethics, values, principles,
humanitarian causes, and our soul and dedication and our roles and obligations
to our nation, the world and humanity. As the premier university, it is incumbent
upon us to create, lead and sustain these honourable values and principles for our
                   current and future generations.
               10. The SECOND POINT, our role and purpose in nation building and civilizational
progress as a higher education and research institution.
