Merdeka Message from the MESSAGE NO.
Vice Chancellor 19
Dear Campus Community,
30 AUGUST 2025
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera
1. This Merdeka celebration has been made more meaningful with the string of
feats achieved by our university, as the nation’s foremost university, with duty-
bound obligations to elevate the country’s profile and to create a new hope of
advancement for the nation and the people.
2. We have done it before, and we will continue to maintain our upward drive
to produce the needed human capital, technological advancement, new
breakthroughs, and cutting edge research and academic outcomes to the nation,
as we come together to celebrate the nation’s independence.
3. From our stellar feat in the QS World University Rankings to the various
achievements by our campus community and the strength of our research
successes, these do not happen in a vacuum. Those are the results of our entire
ecosystem of university development that emphasise on the strength and spirit of
sacrifice, dedication, merit, loyalty and pride and love for the university.
4. These are exactly the same manifestation for our unyielding love and pride for 79
the country in our Merdeka celebration, in playing our roles to showcase our
unwavering loyalty and patriotism to the country and its people.
5. This transcends conventional approaches per se, but in renewing our faith and
our dedication in giving our best to the causes that we believe in, and in making a
positive impact to the nation and the people. From our research inventions in the
lab to the everyday teaching and learning in lecture halls and field works on the
ground, we create ripple effects for the nation in ways that we always overlook.
6. Hence, we must take pride in the responsibilities and roles that we have been
entrusted upon, whether as students, researchers or professors, as all of us share
the same affiliation as Malaysians.
7. Several core facets of the future of higher education and the correlation to the
spirit of nationhood and Merdeka stand out. Inclusive access to quality higher
education and the openness for diversity and the amalgamation of diverse talents,
expertise and knowledge remain the pinnacle of shared aspirations of progress
for humanity.
8. Universiti Malaya reaffirms this cornerstone of an inclusive, free and fair access to
shared values of education and knowledge sharing, where a pooled capacity of
common understanding and the universal intent to gain and share knowledge and
experience remain the underlying pillar of the future of global education.
9. Cognisant that different geographical locations and the enriching diversity of
varying demographic groups of the world bring with them a distinct depth of
succinct culture, experience and knowledge, the university continues to celebrate
the diversity of our campus community, and will continue to welcome talents from
the world over.
10. I regard the principles of diversity and inclusivity not only as moral values, but
also as strategic strengths that have driven the success of the university on the
international stage.
