Building closer Malaysia-South Korea ties
through 21st-century challenges
On 14 December 2022, Institute of Strategic and By By Soh Chin Wen, Nurin Nabilah, Insyirah Sofiyah
International Studies (ISIS) hosted a forum regarding the and Qistina Walidd, International and Strategic
Malaysia-South Korea relation, titled, “Closer Malaysia Studies Department
South Korea Ties Through 21st Century Challenges”'. Four
third year students from the Department of International
and Strategic studies, attended this forum on the
recommendation of Dr. Andrea Passeri.
The welcoming remarks from the Senior Director of ISIS
Malaysia, Alizan Mahadi and the ambassador of the
Republic of Korea to Malaysia, H.E. Yeo Seung-bae were
followed by a session on ‘The Indo-Pacific and Look East
Policy: Realizing a Malaysia-ROK Strategic Partnership.’
Speakers included Mr. Lim Sang Woo, coordinator for the
Indo-Pacific Strategy Task Force, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, Republic of Korea, Mr. Sahipulijaiman Sulaiman
from the Ministry of Defense Malaysia and Dr. Roy Anthony
Rogers, Deputy Executive Director of Asia-Europe Institute The panels of the forum
from Universiti Malaya. Speakers discussed the strategies
for a free, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region
along with the potential areas of collaboration between
Malaysia and South Korea like cybersecurity and people-
to-people relations.
In the second session, Mr. Jazreen Harith Jefri from IDEAS
Malaysia discussed the possibilities of a two way business
partnership. Dr. Helena Varkkey , also from the Department
of International and Strategic studies, highlighted the
issues of sustainability and green energy cooperation . Dr.
Cho Wondeuk from the Korean National Diplomatic
Academy focused on cultural diplomacy. Ambassador Yeo
provided a final note on facilitating greater engagement
and strategic partnership as the two countries explore
grounds of cooperation in the 21st century. Students and AP Dr. Helena after the forum
JPAS Lecture Series V On 31 October 2022, the Department of International and
Strategic Studies, FASS together with the International
Relations Society of Universiti Malaya (IRSOC) organized the
fifth edition of the JPAS Lecture Series with Dr. Andrew N.
Iliopoulos, Assistant Professor, Department of International
and European Studies, University of Piraeus, Greece. With
his formidable background in international security,
intelligence reform, European security, foreign policy
analysis and cyber security, Dr. Iliopoulos’ lecture focused
on the challenges of the European Union’s (EU) Digital
Sovereignty. Apart from the implications of growing
digitalisation in the field of international relations, Dr.
Iliopoulos also discussed contemporary events like the
Russia-Ukrainian War and the lessons that could be learned
by other regional blocs. 82 participants ranging from
undergraduates to postgraduates attended this lecture.
