I felt complicated and overwhelmed with all the stories the older adults
have been through. Generations change as the years go by, not only do
the times change, things change and thoughts change too! As one of the
“youngsters” in the 2000s, I would say our minds and thoughts are quite
different from those who are older. However, if we are willing to be
patient and listen to what they say, it will be a very beneficial
experiential talk for us. My interviewee, Madam Goh, is a retiree who is
open-minded and willing to share what she has experienced with us.
This made the conversation and the interview process easy. What she
has gone through taught me some things, such as to be clear about your

The most important value we should always keep in mind is to be respectful, no matter who we are treating.
People will look up to you too when you treat them respectfully with sincerity. Besides, we should always be
open-minded to not only new invented ideas or items, but also towards the so-called “old-school” style and
traditional thoughts. Only when we are willing to listen to each other, we know and get close with each
other, bringing warmth to the society.

Interviewing an older person makes me feel inspired to pursue my
dream in dentistry despite many challenges awaiting me because they
also faced many hardships back then but can still achieve their dream
and survive until now. An older person is a fun person to talk to. I find it
interesting because they have many stories about the past that they
really want to share with the younger generation. My interviewee, who
was born during the Japanese invasion of Malaya, shared her experience
hiding from the Japanese soldiers. It was an intense moment and I feel
so engaged by her stories because I have never experienced that kind of
situation before. I realise how fortunate we are today thanks to the

                   you do.

Older adults are the most suitable person as our role model and source of inspiration as they have more
experience in life than us. Take your time to approach and start a conversation with them. Who, knows they
might have many interesting stories to share about their past life.
