In my address, I invited our graduates to view the world with greater honesty and
realism. This is why Universiti Malaya does not produce technical thinkers alone, but
principled human beings. UM holds firmly to the philosophy that knowledge cannot
stand on its own without soul. Progress without values brings harm, and intellect
without morality produces only sophistication without humanity.
I emphasised to our graduates that the world awaiting them will test not only their
intelligence, but their moral courage. There will come moments when their decisions
are shaped not by formulas or data alone, but by the values and integrity embedded
within them. As global standards grow increasingly blurred, moral courage becomes
the most essential compass.
I believe UM graduates will carry this strength forward.

To parents and families, my appreciation is endless. No academic success exists
without the prayers and sacrifices of family. I saw faces filled with gratitude, relief and
pride. This success is yours as well. Thank you for entrusting Universiti Malaya with
your most precious responsibility.

This convocation also reminds me of the larger mission of a premier national public
university. UM is not merely a place of teaching and learning; UM is a leader in shaping
national talent, a driver of Malaysia’s competitiveness, a producer of future leaders,
a contributor to national policy development, and a moral voice in society. In an
increasingly challenging global landscape, UM must continue to stand as a beacon of
intellectual strength, a source of wisdom, and a voice that upholds truth, justice, and
humanity.

We are not just producing graduates - we are nurturing nation-builders, industry
shapers, policy influencers and global citizens rooted in Malaysian values yet capable 243
of engaging the wider world.
To the Class of 2025, you will face moments where your intelligence will be challenged
by complexity, where your courage will be tested by injustice, and where your integrity
will be confronted by convenience or fear. In those moments, I hope you will remember
that ethical clarity must guide your choices, compassion must guide your leadership,
and wisdom must guide your actions. The world does not need leaders who are merely
clever - it needs leaders who are principled, empathetic and conscious of humanity’s
shared destiny.
Do not wait for the future to happen. Shape it. Do not simply follow the current. Lead it.
Do not chase success for yourselves alone. Create success that uplifts communities,
strengthens the nation and contributes to humanity.
