Book and CD Launch Programme 2023 by
Indian Studies Department

The Department of Indian Studies of the Faculty of Art and
Social Science, Universiti Malaya collaborated with Majlis
Pembakuan Bahasa Tamil Malaysia on the “Diaspora and
Post-Diaspora in Sinophone, Anglophone and Tamil
Literature from Malaysia: Constructing Inclusive National
Narrative” books and CD launch program. This program
was conducted on March 11, 2023, at the Faculty of Arts
and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. Under the program,
two books and a CD were launched.
The first book is entitled Athichudi. Originally written by the
celebrated poet Avvaiyar who lived during the classical
period, the book is hailed as one of the best Tamil works of
literature. It has been translated into three languages:
Malay, English and Chinese. The second book is known as
Istilah Bahasa Tamil. This book is intended as a dictionary 'Athichudi' and 'Istilah Bhasa Tamil' books
consisting of new Tamil words, and providing Malay and
English translations for every word. In addition, a CD Studies Department, Universiti Malaya and Mr
containing Tamil-animated teachings and learnings was Narayanasamy, the chairman of the Majlis Pembakuan
also launched. Bahasa Tamil Malaysia. It was indeed a moment of pride for
the Department of Indian Studies and Majlis Pembakuan
The program was inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Bahasa Tamil Malaysia when the Deputy Minister of
Education, Lim Hui Ying. Opening addresses were Education, Lim Hui Ying noted in her address that she was
delivered by Dr S. Manimaran, the Head of the Indian very impressed.
Book Launch on Lead and Grow
A book launch was held on 13 February 2023 at The Cube
for Lead and Grow: 115 Years of the Kuala Lumpur-
Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(UM Press, 2021).
The book was jointly launched by the Vice Chancellor,
Professor Dato Mohd Hamdi Abdul Shukor and Tan Sri Ter
Leong Yap, Honorary Life President of the Kuala Lumpur-
Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Also in attendance were Datuk Ng Yih Pyng, the President,
Dato Tan Tian Meng, Vice President and many leaders of
the Chamber and also members of UM. The books, in Launching by the Vice Chancellor and Honorary Life President of
English and Chinese editions, were published by Universiti Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and
Malaya Press. The Executive Director of UM Press, Mr Industry
Adam Wong Abdullah also attended the event.
The book was a result of a research project undertaken by
the team led by the Dean, Professor Wong and Dr Tan
Miau Ing. The team had also helped the Chamber to
establish its Historical Gallery, also known as Lead and
Grow. In his speech, the Vice Chancellor took note of the
many alumni of UM who now hold leadership roles in the
Chamber, as well as the national organisation, the
Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Giving of books 'Lead and Grow' to schools
