        IRSOC Social Gathering

On 12 January 2022, IRSOC held a social gathering at the
Department of IR. Social gatherings for clubs and potlucks
are great ways for students with shared interests or
backgrounds to come together and build relationships.
These events can be a lot of fun, but they also require
some planning and organisation to make sure everything
runs smoothly. We want all batches in the department of IR
to engage and get to know each other. Then, comes the
decision on the format for the event. Will it be a potluck or
will you provide the food? Yes, it is a potluck with a variety
of foods since our students of IR come from different races
    and backgrounds.

Consider setting a theme for the event to add some fun
and excitement. We have karaoke, games and sharing
sessions with all and mingle freely while talking about
studying and hobbies. We have organised some activities
to help students get to know each other such as games,
a trivia contest, or simply providing some conversation
starters. Finally, we have our photo session with all
attendees to thank everyone for coming and encourage
them to come to future events.

From 17-19th February, I participated in the EU-ASEAN
Young Diplomats Programme 2023; it is a simulation
exercise held at the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya value of diplomatic and negotiation skills, as well as the
and funded by the European Union. I was chosen as a strategic use of neutral language and non-violent
delegate, along with 45 Malaysian students from across communication when interacting with representatives
the country. As the diplomat representing Austria, I had the from other countries.
opportunity to speak on the Myanmar Crisis and to share
my thoughts and recommendations in the form of policy Remarkably, one of my personal highlights of the events
prescriptions with other designated delegates so as to was being in the presence of two inspiring and prominent
produce a strategic and comprehensive joint statement advocates for youth empowerment, Right Honourable
that was approved by a majority. Members of Parliament, Mr Syed Saddiq and Ms Hannah
Yeoh, who gave us some insightful advice on the best
Indeed, there were certainly many heated debates, course of action to take in order to resolve the issue and
intensive discussions and highly productive exchanges provide guidance on the underlying expectations and
throughout this process which enlightened me on the realities of the policy-making process.
