Flexible Learning Time
E-learning can help students to adapt and study the online content or material at their
own pace. Students can access ephemeral portals at any time to interact, submit papers,
and others. (Ahmad and Chua (2015) stated that in the future, e-learning will be an
important virtual learning platform because it can improve the quality of learning and
teaching in the education system.
Solution to Class Shortages
Blended learning uses the flipped classroom concept. It is one of the most flexible way
and opportunity for lecturers to hold on a regular basis of face-to-face class discussion
or through online operations and therefore, an electronic educational technology like
CIDOS is important to make this process a success. Furthermore presently, the
increasing number of students yearly is a common phenomenon. The intake of PKS
students is averaging from 500 students in the December session and 1,200 students for
the June session per intake. The number of new students will affect the shortage of
classrooms. The addition of new lecture rooms also do not occur. Therefore, the use of
CIDOS to support the e-learning process is a solution to this problem.
Cost Effective
E-learning in PKS has helped reduce the cost of developing classrooms, providing
furniture and daily attendance to the classrooms. In addition, learning materials can use
the ICT facilities available on campus. Ismail et al. (2018) stated that learning materials
such as MOOCs are very easy to use as they only need smartphones and laptops for
access to the internet anywhere. Students do not have to be present at the campus at all
times to meet with lecturers or submit assignments. The internet and gadgets are
currently inexpensive and affordable for Malaysians.
CURRENT CHALLENGES
Internet Facilities and Hardware
Development for e-learning is very difficult for some institutions. Provision should be
made to provide an e-learning system to modernize learning in institutions. Investment
requirements to fund ICT equipment require careful planning. When facilities such as
computers and the internet are available, it will definitely benefit the lecturers and
students. Ilyas et al. (2017) pointed out that institutions need to provide online facilities
to facilitate students to surf the internet to fulfill blended learning. Interruption to internet
services on campus can cause learning processes to be affected for both the educators
and the students.
